Ali Neuman, Ali’s mother, narrowly avoided being killed by Inkatha as a child. Inkatha is a militant political party fighting Nelson Mandela’s African National Congress. He and his mother were the only ones to survive those terrible years. The psychological scars are still there, as many others who survived. Ali heads the South African Police’s Cape Town homicide division. Brian Epkeen is a white, free-spirited officer who was involved in the creation of apartheid. He works well alongside Neuman. They have to confront the crime in large areas with unemployed people. This is often exacerbated when there are gangs from both Africa and local. Two young girls are murdered and their job becomes more complicated. The city has now been afflicted by a new evil and its inhabitants have been given a brand new drug, which includes both the murder victims. The echoes from apartheid still echo in the darkness of a society striving toward reconciliation at the chaos crossroads between modernization and brutality. –Anonymous
