Vincent & Theo

It is the latter part of the nineteenth century. Vincent Van Gogh’s adult Dutch brothers, Theo Van Gogh (living in Paris), lead different lives, despite sharing art. Vincent is a firm believer in God, but not religion. He wants to become a full-time painter and live in poverty to create his art. Theo works as an artist gallery owner and lives in squalor. He doesn’t want to live a luxurious life. The brothers share a commonality in succumbing easily to the pleasures of the flesh. Vincent’s artwork isn’t in high demand so Theo doesn’t sell it. Vincent doesn’t change his view of Vincent when he discovers that it is Theo and not Vincent’s father, as he previously believed, who supports him. Every brother is an individual with a broken heart. Vincent was considered madness in his case. There are key events and extended periods that each brother has had in their lives. These include: Vincent’s time in Provence with Paul Gaugin and Theo’s struggle with syphilis. This also impacts how he deals with their sexual relationships. This is due in part to Vincent being often a third of their relationship. The presentation shows Vincent’s current status and the respect he is receiving. –Huggo
