The Sound of Music

A young lady named Maria (Dame Julie Andrews), in 1930 Austria, is struggling to be a nun. Maria gets the job after Navy Captain Georg Von Trapp (Christopher Plummer), writes to the convent seeking a governess who can manage his seven mischievous kids. Maria is appointed to the job after the Captain’s widow is gone. He is away a lot and manages the household just as well as the ships. They are both unhappy with the constant hiring of governesses by their father, but have been able to manage each one. Maria is met initially with hostility by her father, but she soon attracts them to her kindness and understanding. She also brings joy to their entire lives, including that of the Captain. He and Maria fall in love even though Elsa, the Baroness of Maria’s choice, is engaged to him. Both of them begin to question the choices they made. However, their personal differences soon get overshadowed by global events. The Germans are about to take control of Austria, so the Captain could soon be drafted in the German Navy to face the threat to his country. –LOTUS73
