The Master (2012)

Freddie Quell has difficulty adjusting to civilian life after he was discharged from the US Navy following WWII. This is partly because of his experiences in wartime in the tropics. His temper is violent. His obsession with sex is part of the reason he cannot and will not commit to Doris Solstad, his teenage girlfriend. He is also an alcoholic who drinks mainly concoctions that he makes with hazardous ingredients. These factors are what lead him to be fired from every job he has, including that of a department store photographer and cabbage picker. He stumbles across a yacht owned by Lancaster Dodd and Peggy Dodd. This yacht is the one on which Elizabeth will be married. Lancaster offers Freddie a job aboard the yacht, and he feels a sense of connection with him. Lancaster also indoctrinates Freddie into the Cause, a cult that claims to cure grave ills and promote world peace. Peggy, Elizabeth and Elizabeth’s husband Clark support Lancaster’s teachings. Lancaster’s and Peggy’s son Val Dodd are the only ones who don’t believe his father is making up things as he pleases. Freddie, who has lost his psychological sense of self, is an easy target. He is always looking for someone or something to help him reach a higher level. As Freddie goes along with the Dodd family to spread the gospel, he may end up in conflict with them if he cannot find the Cause or the Cause the things he needs emotionally. –Huggo
