The Last Five Years

Jason Robert Brown, Tony-winning composer and lyricist is the musical version of The Last Five Years. It depicts a love story and marriage that took place over five years. Jamie Wellerstein, a talented young Jewish novelist, falls for Cathy Hiatt (a Shiksa Goddess-strugging actress). The intercutting time-line device allows them to tell their story almost exclusively through music. All of Cathy’s songs are set at the end their marriage, and then move forwards to their relationship. Jamie’s songs go backwards to their beginning love affair. Jamie proposes to them in the middle. –Anonymous
