The Book of Eli

A drifter named Eli (Denzel Washington) has wandered westward through North America over the past thirty years in a post-apocalyptic world. A book is his only comfort. He keeps it on him and watches over it closely. While surviving, he hunts small animals and seeks out goods from destroyed homes and vehicles that he can trade with villages to get water and other supplies. He reaches Carnegie’s village, where a powerful mobster (Gary Oldman) sees Eli’s fighting abilities and offers him a spot in his gang. Carnegie asks Claudia, his blind lover (Jennifer Beals), to send Solara (Mila Kunis) so that Eli can spend the night sleeping with her. Eli, however, is a better man than Claudia when he declines her advances. When Carnegie discovers that Eli has a book, the girl is shocked and beat by him until her mother reveals exactly what she saw. Carnegie dispatches his gang to the wilderness to steal Eli’s book. But the man is a fierce foe and makes it clear that they will have to kill him if they wish to get the book. Harry Jankel, London. England
