Spud

It is South Africa 1990. It’s South Africa, 1990. Two important events will occur: Nelson Mandela’s release and more importantly Spud Milton’s first year in a private boys-only boarding school. John Milton, a young boy of ordinary origin wins a scholarship at a private school located in Kwazulu Natal, South Africa. Spud is surrounded by nicknamed boys like Rain Man, Rain Man, Gecko and Mad Dog. He struggles to adjust to the new environment. Spud begins his journey to becoming a man. It could take a long time to get there. Spud is an alone child. Spud is cursed by parents who are well above the fringes of lunatic schizophrenia and an elderly granny. He is paranoid about his dad’s anti-communist beliefs and fears that the domestic worker at their family home is operating a shebeen. Spud’s mom, a wild spirit, is the worst nightmare of a teenage, and she can be found shopping at local grocery stores for Spud’s clothes or sneaking food in her bag to school functions. Spud is armed only with his wits, his journal, and he takes us from the illegal world of night swimming to the scorching heat of cricket pitch. He also guides us through ghostbusting to an unplanned family vacation. We are also invited into his mind as a boy who struggles to accept a new world. A boy whose eyes open to love, friendship, and total insanity. Rose Garland
