Sara’s Notebook

Laura Alonso, a Spanish-born lawyer, sets out to visit the Democratic Republic of Congo (central Africa). She saw a photograph in which Sara, her younger sibling, appeared alive. This photo was taken two years ago with very little information about where she is located. Laura discovers Sara was taken in Goma. This is the troubled region due to conflict between local warlords over coltan (a valuable and costly mineral). Laura, determined to make it to the end, even though she doesn’t know the country nor the language, contacts Sergio Rojas, an Latin businessman to help her find the best way to travel to Goma. Laura, Sara’s former lover, asks Sergio to help her go Goma. Sven meets Jamir, an ex-child soldier and reluctantly agrees to Laura’s request. They embark on a journey together from Uganda to Goma, via Rwanda. This crossing the border is from eastern DR Congo. Laura will not only be at risk as they travel but also her mind and spirit will experience a brutal reality in which life is of no use and death can appear in any corner. This situation becomes even more dire when Laura discovers Jamir’s secret past and when Laura finds Sara. Her sister’s unique circumstances make it difficult for her to save her. –Chockys
