Eric Marsh, Prescott Fire Department, is fed up fighting forest fires in Arizona when Type 1 or Hotshot front-line forest fire fighters crews far away overrule him and his suggestions for his region’s pain. Marsh is granted permission by the Mayor to create a unique municipal Hotshot squad for Prescott. Marsh requires new members, including Brendan McDonough (a young wastrel), to go through the intense training and qualifying testing required for firefighting duty. The new Granite Mountain Hotshots emerge from the challenges. McDonough and all of the other men are transformed by this fire-forged camaraderie. This will all be put to the ultimate test when the Yarnell Hill Fire hits in 2013. It is a challenge that no one should ignore. –Kenneth Chisholm ([email protected])
