The life of black-American Chiron spans three time periods: young adolescence through mid-teenage and young adult. As a young boy, Chiron lived with Paula, his mother, a single crack addict, in an area of Miami that is rife with crime. Because of his small stature and the neglect that his mother has shown him, Chiron can be shy and withdrawn. These issues lead to Chiron being bullied and receiving hurtful slurs from others. Chiron has a Cuban-American friend, Kevin. He also gets some guidance from Juan (a local drug dealer who sees that Chiron is being neglected), and Teresa, Juan’s girlfriend, Teresa. Teresa’s home is a refuge from bullies as well as Paula’s abuse. This childhood may give Chiron a certain path, but it will be exacerbated by the peer pressure that will affect his choices as a teenager. –Huggo
