Minamata

New York City, 1971. W. Eugene Smith (Johnny Depp), after his famed days as a photojournalist of World War II has turned to recluse and is now disconnected from both society and his profession. Robert Hayes, the Life magazine editor (Bill Nighy), sends Smith to Minamata on the Japanese coast. This city has suffered from mercury poisoning for decades. Smith spends time in the village documenting the people’s efforts to cope with Minamata Disease, as well as their passion for gaining recognition by Chisso Japan and Chisso. Smith captures the tragedy from the village with his trusty camera. His initial assignment becomes a life-altering experience.
