Metropolis (1927)

In the distant future, Metropolis will be home to an utopian society in which its rich residents can live happily. Freder Fredersen is one of them. He spots a gorgeous woman and her children one day. He tries to follow the beautiful woman but is shocked to discover an underground workforce who seem to be responsible for keeping the Utopian universe above ground running. Freder’s father John Fredersen is one of few above-ground people who know about the underground world. He is also the creator and master of Metropolis. Freder discovers that Maria is the name of the woman. She believes in the necessity to connect the “hands”, i.e. the workers, to the “head”, i.e. those who are above the power. A mediator will be the one who acts as the “heart.” Freder is determined to support the struggle of workers for better lives. John discovers what Maria advocates and Freder joins their cause with the help of an old friend. Rotwang is an inventor. But Rotwang becomes their enemy. They set about putting an end to a planned uprising with Maria as the center of it all. John is unaware Rotwang has his own plans. He makes plans to shut down all machines with the possibility of unleashing anarchy above and below the ground. –Huggo
