Mary Queen of Scots
The movie follows the life and times of Mary Stuart (Saoirse Roan). Mary, who was sixteen years old and is now eighteen, has refused to marry. She instead returns to Scotland, where she will regain her rightful place on the throne. England, however, is now under the control of Elizabeth I (MargotRobbie), who wants to reduce Mary’s perceived threat. Every young queen looks at her “sister”, in fascination and fear. The two are rivals in power and love and male rulers in a masculine society. They must choose how they will play the game: independence or marriage. Mary, determined to be more than just a figurehead and to take the English throne as her own, threatens Elizabeth’s sovereignty. Each court’s betrayal, rebellion and conspiracy to overthrow the other threaten both thrones and alter history. Focus Features
