Lost in Translation

Bob Harris, a middle-aged American film star is visiting Tokyo to shoot a Suntory whiskey personal endorsement ad exclusively for Japan. Although he is no longer a movie star, his image and name still hold enough appeal to land this $2 million contract. His home life is not satisfying. Lydia, his wife, follows him everywhere he goes. He uses faxes and messages to keep in touch with their children while Lydia stays home. Charlotte is a fellow American and a recent Yale Philosophy graduate. John is an entertainment still photographer. She is left alone in Tokyo, particularly when her husband’s job requires him to travel outside of Tokyo. Bob and Charlotte feel lost in their present situations. This is not helped by cultural barriers that they face in Tokyo. They meet up in the hotel and spend much of their time together helping each other to deal with the loss they feel. Although the friendship they form isn’t always smooth, it can have lasting effects. –Huggo
