Forrest Bondurant, a legend after his survival of the Second World War, was born in Franklin County, Virginia on 1931. The Bondurant family owns a bootlegging and distillery together with their brothers Howard and Jack. The corrupt District Attorney Mason Wardell and the untrustworthy Special Deputy Charles Rakes arrive in Franklin. However, the Bondurants refuse to pay the required bribe. Rakes follows the brothers, but fails to locate their distillery. Forrest, on the other hand, hires Maggie as a waitress, who is a Chicago woman with a dark past. They fall for each other. Jack marries Bertha Minnix, the daughter of the preacher. He also deals with Floyd Banner to get a large amount of alcohol. Jack is seen in Franklin, attracting Rakes’ attention.
