Joy (2015)

Joy Mangano was fascinated with creating things from childhood. Her maternal grandmother Mimi supported her in this pursuit emotionally. Joy believes that others have made fortunes from ideas she had years ago, but were unable to implement. Joy, despite being financially broke, is still the one in her extended family who everyone turns to. She even gave up college in order to support her parents during their divorce. Her job is as an Eastern Airlines ticket agent, which she finds unsatisfying. She lives with Terry, her mother who watches soaps and her husband Tony (a less successful Latino Tom Jones wannabe). Rudy is Joy’s father and is the proprietor of a failed heavy-duty garage. Joy manages the books for Peggy, her older sister. Rudy’s new girlfriend Sharon drops Rudy off at Joy’s door. Rudy doesn’t get along well with Terry and Tony, which makes Joy’s life more difficult. Joy feels buried in her own life and her childhood dream to make things better seems further away. Joy makes a decision to change her life and receives unwavering support from her family. She decides to make a new product, and this time she makes a mop. Rudy’s wealthy girlfriend Trudy also provided support. Joy must battle with business executives to market her product even if it makes it to manufacturing. That is, unless Joy can somehow get in front of all the American people in one go. It is not a finished deal until the customer pays for the product, and the legal problems are resolved. Joy must decide whether she is going to “pick up” the gun, as Trudy requested in their first investment meeting. This was in order to resolve a particularly difficult legal matter. –Huggo
