Gringo: The Dangerous Life of John McAfee

John McAfee’s life is full of mysteries. After making millions by creating antivirus software, McAfee reinvented himself to become a yogi and herbalist, as well as an entrepreneur. His charm and generosity were his trademark. His life changed dramatically after that. McAfee moved to Belize from the USA and set up a highly armed compound within the jungle. It was akin to a Heart of Darkness. McAfee was not afraid to be in the media spotlight and proudly boasted about his freedom-loving lifestyle that included a large number of young women. His neighbor in Belize was Gregory Faull (an American) who was shot to death by McAfee. McAfee was arrested by the local authorities and taken to Guatemala to be interrogated. He then returned to America to pursue the Libertarian Party nomination as President 2016. Journalists have had different versions of McAfee’s story over the years (including the Vice Report that accidentally revealed his secret location). Nanette Burstein, an Academy Award nominee for cinematography, presents a thorough investigation into the mysterious 70-year old mogul. McAfee declines to interview her, but continues strange cat-and mouse email correspondence for several months. Burstein in Belize conducts new, revelatory interviews with McAfee’s ex-associates. This uncovers his strange behavior with women, gangsters and guns. Burstein investigates the case of Faull’s unsolved death and discovers that McAfee is also accused of crimes not prosecuted. Burstein is not afraid to pursue answers.
