Ali and Nino
Ali, an Arab man of upper classes, is a powerful family member in Baku. Azerbaijan, at that time, was part of Russia’s Empire. Ali’s love, Nino is from Georgia. He is a Christian. However, the couple fall in love deeply and they elope to rural Georgia. Through World War One which saw some Ali’s closest friends go to war, the story follows them as they get married. Baku is the scene of conflict after the Russians surrender. Ali is a Bolshevik fighter with the Azerbaijani militia, and Nino assists wounded soldiers in Baku’s March Days massacre. –Sundance-goer
