About a Boy
Marcus Brewer, twelve years old, lives with Fiona Brewer (his single mother who is chronically depressed). Marcus and Fiona both beat their respective drums. Marcus is willing to do anything to help his mother, who has been depressed for a while. Even if it means he suffers grief. He realizes that his mother is depressed and Marcus is different from other kids. Even the weirder kids won’t like to be around him because he is bullied. He sings to himself and doesn’t realize he is singing. This leads to him being taunted. Will Freeman, 38, is an unemployed slacker. He has been able to live comfortably on the royalties from a song he wrote for his father and has not had to work one day. His only priority is himself. He discovers that single mothers can satisfy his selfish sexual needs. Will first meets Marcus in this capacity. Suzie is one of Will’s single mothers conquests and is friends with Marcus. Marcus enters Will’s world to try and escape from his own life. Will is not happy about this. Will gradually realizes Marcus is not just a bother, but a guide to navigate through the difficulties of growing up and dealing with the loss of his mother. Marcus might be able show Will how to become a true adult. –Huggo
