A United Kingdom
The late 1940s see Prince Seretse Khma of Bechuanaland studying law in Britain to prepare for his ascension onto the throne. The dashing prince meets Ruth Williams, a British white clerk. They plan to get married. They know that their uncle, The Regent, will not approve of the proposal, but nothing can prepare them for the domestic political turmoil and diplomatic firestorms their passionate love would cause. The international opposition to a Briton being their Queen is more fierce now that the British are holding on to the land of their protectorate. They also fear the racist reaction to the affront to South Africa’s apartheid rule. In spite of all odds King Khama must fight to keep their love for Ruth and their countrymen in the land which would be called Republic of Botswana. –Kenneth Chisholm ([email protected])
