In the small village of Anatevka, in pre-revolutionary Russia under the Czars, Jews and Orthodox Christians lived at the start of the 20th century. The matchmaker organizes and approves matches. This is one of the Jewish communities’ traditions. Reb Tevye, a milkman who has been married to Golde for 25 years and is poor, has five children. Tevye accepts to marry the widower butcher Lazar Wolf when Yente, a local matchmaker arranges the match. Tzeitel falls in love with Motel Kamzoil, a poor tailor. They ask for permission to Tevye marry her. Tevye agrees to the marriage of his second daughter, Hodel Marsh (Michele Marsh), and Perchik, a revolutionary student. Perchik is taken into custody by Czar troops, and then sent to Siberia. Hodel leaves her homeland to travel to Siberia with Perchik. Tevye refuses Chava’s third-daughter to marry Christian Fyedka.
