The Last Samurai

American spies in the 1870s hire Captain Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise), who is a disreputable veteran of American Civil War who will do anything for anybody. He trains the peasant conscripts to become the Imperial Army’s first modern-era weaponized Imperial Army. First priority of the Imperial Omura cabinet (Masato harada) is to suppress a rebellion by traditionalist Samurai. These hereditary warriors are loyal to the sacred Dynasty but refuse to accept the Westernizing policies and have even refused firearms. But, his superior force is too slow to respond and their panic gives way to the sword-wielding Samurai. Algren, badly wounded, saves the life of Katsumoto (Ken Watanabe), the leader of the samurai. After being nursed back to health, Algren learns and values the Japanese tradition and is an advisor to Katsumoto in his failed effort to save Bushido. However, Omura receives repressive laws. When the war returns to the field, he must choose whether to honour his loyalty to one side or the other. –KGF Vissers
