The Rock

Stanley Goodspeed, a biochemist and F.B.I. resident, lives in Washington, D.C. Stanley receives a phone call from the F.B.I. shortly after Carla Pestalozzi, his fiancée, announces she is pregnant. James Womack is the director. Stanley is told by Womack that San Francisco’s Alcatraz Island was taken hostage along with eighty-one tourists. This incident comes after Marine General Francis Xavier Hummel, who has protested for many years the refusal of government to provide benefits for families of veterans killed in covert military operations, took San Francisco’s Alcatraz Island hostage. General Hummel was driven over the edge by his wife’s death on March 9, 1995. Now, he is holding hostages to prove his point. Stanley is required because General Hummel stole some VX-gas warheads, and has threatened to launch them on San Francisco if he doesn’t meet his demands. Stanley is skilled in disarming the bombs but needs someone with sufficient knowledge of Alcatraz to help him get inside. John Patrick Mason is a former British intelligence agent who was accused of stealing J. Edgar Hoover’s private files. Mason has spent the last thirty years in prison without ever being tried. John was the last Alcatraz inmate to escape, making him the first to do so. He also managed to stay out of Alcatraz for long enough to have a daughter, Jade Angelou, in 1962. John accepts Stanley’s help, despite his hatred for the F.B.I. John and Stanley, along with a Navy S.E.A.L. are taken to Alcatraz. General Hummel and his men decimate the whole S.E.A.L. Stanley and John are left to save the hostages on their own, while General Hummel’s men kill all of S.E.A.L. –Todd Baldridge
