John Ferguson, known as Scottie by his friends, becomes obsessive about two women after he retires from San Francisco Police Department detective work. These obsessions trouble Midge Wood who is a woman’s clothing designer. Gavin Elster’s college friend Madeleine Elster is the first. Madeleine, a wealthy, elegant, platinum-blonde woman, hires John as his guide because Gavin believes that Madeleine may have been haunted by Carlotta Valdes. Gavin also knows that Madeleine was mentally unstable at the time she was 26. John meets Judy Barton on the streets. Judy is a working-class girl. But John is obsessed with Judy because despite her work class appearance and brunette hair she looks like Madeleine. He tries to make Judy look more beautiful. John first wonders if Judy and Madeleine have any connection. John’s relationship with Madeleine, Judy and him individually is affected by John’s recent workplace accident that revealed that John is an acrophobic person who experiences severe vertigo when he descends from high places. –Huggo
