Varsity Blues

High school football in small Texas towns is considered a religion. As long as the team wins, the head coach is a deity. 17-year old schoolboys bring the hope of the entire town onto the gridiron each Friday night. Bud Kilmer (Jon Voight), in his 30th season as the head coach of West Canaan Coyotes, is trying to win their 23rd Division title. The Coyotes’ star quarterback Lance Harbor (Paul Walker), is injured and they are forced to regroup with John Moxon (James Van Der Beek), who is a second-string quarterback that has a somewhat irreverent view of the game. “Varsity Blues,” a documentary about our obsession with sport and the way that teenage athletes react to extraordinary pressures, explores how we view sports. –Steven Chea
