Three men escape a Siberian Gulag to flee communist Russia in 1939. The movie tells the story of these men and four other escapees, as well as that of Irena Zielinska (a teenager) who flees with them. Janusz Weiszczek is the group’s leader. He was convicted of torturing his wife and faces charges that he tortured his children. Under the cover of snowstorm, they escape: American Mr. Smith (cynical), Russian thug Valka (comedic accountant Zoran), Tomasz Horodinsky (pâtissier), Priest Andrejs Voss and Kazik from Poland, who is blind at night. They are faced with freezing nights, deprivation of water and food, and mosquitoes. There is also an interminable desert and the Himalayas. —
