The Reader
The READER is set in Post-War Germany, when young Michael Berg falls ill. Hanna helps him home. Hanna is a stranger two years his senior. Michael is cured of scarlet fever, and Hanna visits him to say thank you. They quickly fall in love and begin a secret relationship. Michael learns Hanna enjoys being read to, and the relationship between them deepens. Hanna loves it when Michael reads to them from “The Odyssey,” Huck Finn, and “The Lady with the Little Dog.” Michael, despite their strong bond, is confused when Hanna mysteriously vanishes. Michael, an undergraduate studying law, is shocked to see Hanna again in his life eight years later. Hanna is this time a defendant in courtroom. Michael discovers the truth about Hanna’s history and it will have a profound impact on their lives.
