A resident Duke is a nurse who reads to a woman with dementia and memory loss. Allie Hamilton, a wealthy 17-year-old girl from the 1930s is on summer vacation at Seabrook. Noah Calhoun, a local worker, meets Allie during a carnival. They quickly fall for each other. Noah takes Allie along to an old house he hopes to restore and buys. They try to fall in love, but are interrupted by a friend. Their romance is not approved by Allie’s family as Noah comes from another social group. They move to New York together. Allie receives 365 letters from Noah (an entire year), but Anne Hamilton, her mother, does not give them. The United States enters World War II three years later. Noah, his friend Fin, and Allie work as army nurses. Lon Hammond, an injured soldier, is her friend. They meet again after the war and go on dates. Then Lon, who has a wealth and is handsome, proposes to her. Noah restores the house while Noah is still alive and many want it. Allie stumbles upon a photo of Noah’s house in a newspaper. She feels split between her first love, and her relationship with Lon.
