The Nightingale
The NIGHTINGALE, a reflection on the horrors and colonization of Australia set in the early 19th century. Clare is a native Irish woman and mother who, at 21 years old, was held prisoner by her British lieutenant Hawkins. She desperately wants to escape her obsessive master. Aidan, Clare’s husband intervenes and has devastating consequences. Clare follows Hawkins after British authorities fail justice to her. Hawkins leaves abruptly to take over a post as a captain up north. She is unfamiliar with Tasmanian wilderness and hires Billy, an Aboriginal orphan. The two are traumatized by past experiences and must overcome prejudices and distrust against the background of Australia’s notorious ‘Black War. –Mae Moreno
