The New World
After captain Newport arrives on board in 1607, Captain Smith escapes his violent hanging sentence. Newport is establishing Jamestown in Virginia. After a violent ‘theft’, the initially friendly natives who don’t have any personal property concepts, become hostile. Smith is taken prisoner during an armed expedition. However, Pocahontas, the chief’s favourite daughter, escapes. She pleads with the stranger to help her. Soon, she becomes her lover, and they begin to live a harmonious, naive way of life. He returns to his grim fort and is starved if she hadn’t arranged for Indian generosity. Each side quickly labels their lover traitors and she is exiled. He was then flogged to begin slavish labor. Things change again and Smith accepts a northern-more assignment. He anglicizes Pocahontas believing him dead. This makes Smith the mother to John Rolfe, an aristocratic new love. For a final in England, they’ll be reunited. –KGF Vissers
