The Elephant Man

Victorian London’s Dr. Frederick Treves comes across “The Elephant Man”, a sideshow circus run by Bytes. The actual creature is actually Joseph Merrick, a twenty-one year-old man with several physical defects, such as an over-sized skull and a disfigured right shoulder. Brutish Buttes is Merrick’s “owner” and he only wants to make as much money by presenting Merrick like a freak. Treves is able to take Merrick into his hospital care, but not without many obstacles. He also has to be interrogated by authorities since Merrick can’t be treated. Treves believes Bytes’ claim that Merrick, who is deaf and cannot speak, is false. However, he eventually learns that Merrick has a good memory and can communicate well. Merrick is a well-known curiosity in London, and becomes famous among the upper classes, along with actress Mrs. Kendal. Although Merrick is treated with more humanity, it becomes clear that Treves’ actions may be an extension of Merrick’s exploitation. Merrick’s fame grows and others attempt to exploit him. Bytes has also lost his dinner ticket. –Huggo
