Schrader directed the film. It follows William Tell (Oscar Isaac), who is a former soldier and gambler, and he sets out to transform a young man in order to get revenge on an enemy. Tell wants nothing more than to enjoy playing cards. Cirk approaches Tell, an angry and vulnerable young man who wants to take revenge on a former military major. Through his friendship with Cirk, Tell believes he has a chance to redeem himself. Tell is supported by La Linda, a mysterious gambler financier, and takes Cirk along with him. They travel from one casino to another until they reach their goal of winning the World Series of Poker. Tell is unable to keep Cirk straight and narrow, so he drags him back into his dark past. –Variety
