Richard and Emmeline, Richard’s father, find themselves in a boat about to burst while on their way to San Francisco. The two children are rescued to safety by Paddy Button and their uncle, while their father and uncle remain on another lifeboat. The lifeboats get separated in the chaos that follows. Emmeline, Richard, and Paddy find themselves without food or water in the middle nowhere. The three eventually find a uncharted paradise where Paddy quickly shows the children how to fish, hunt, and build. Paddy drowns after consuming a barrel full of rum on the island where they first arrived. This takes a while. Emmeline, alone, and terrified, moves to a new location and builds their island home. The two teenagers, Emmeline and Richard, have built a real home over the years. However, hormones and emotions between them cause tensions. Richard is determined to get San Francisco but Emmeline lets him down when Emmeline sees a ship pass the island. Emmeline does not light her signal fire. Emmeline throws Emmeline out of their home together and she tries to survive by herself, but it is too late. Richard discovers that Emmeline is dying and tries to help her. Nature takes its course, and the couple fall in love. Emmeline gives birth to a child and Richard doesn’t understand why. –Bree Pearson
