Tehran Taboo
This beautifully animated drama combines the stories of two young musicians and several strong women. These stories expose the hypocrisies in modern Iranian society where corruption, drugs and sex coexist alongside strict religious law. Avoiding prohibitions is a common activity in Tehran’s bustling city. Breaking taboos may be an option to personal freedom. Women always end up at the bottom of the social hierarchy. To “restore her virginity,” a young woman must undergo an operation. In exchange for favorable judgment, a judge at the Islamic Revolutionary Court urges favors from prostitutes. A divorce is refused to the wife of a drug addict who is in prison. Ali Soozandeh, an Iranian expat filmmaker creates a picture of Tehran today using rotoscope animation. –Anonymous
