Silence

The devout Portuguese Catholic priests Sebastiao Rodriguez and Francisco Garupe set out to Japan in 1633, determined to find the truth about Father Cristovao ferreira’s sudden end of correspondence. The Jesuit missionaries, who were astonished to hear that Ferreira had committed suicide, set off on a search for their mentor amid bloodshed from violent anti-Christian purges. The two Japanese guides, Kichijiro and Ferreira arrive in Japan to see firsthand how difficult it is for those with a different faith in an ancient land. As the powerful Grand Inquisitor Inoue performs horrendous tortures upon the courageous Japanese Christians, Father Rodrigues is soon going to have to test his faith by renunciating it in return for the lives of the prisoner. It is evident that there has been a subtle shift in the end of the world. But, what makes God’s silence so ominous? –Nick Riganas
