Seabiscuit

Everyone needs to have a goal to help them get through this Depression. Charles Howard, the car maker is struggling to rebuild his life following the death of his child and subsequent end of his first marriage. Charles is joined by Marcela, his second wife. He wants to enter horse racing. This leads him to a group of underdogs that are also working towards their dreams. First, Tom Smith is a trainer who can spot potential in horses. Seabiscuit, Tom’s choice for Charles is an unusual horse. Despite his pedigreed lines, Seabiscuit stands at 15 and a 1/2 hands high with a mild limp. Tom sees something in Seabiscuit that could make him a winner if he can be trained from his past inbred mistakes. Third, Johnny Pollard (nicknamed for his dark hair) is the jockey that they hire. Red, like Tom, has shown an uncanny ability to work with horses. However, he has been angered by his childhood, which only stemmed from the Depression. He is also large, which makes him a difficult jockey. Red, Seabiscuit, and Tom share a common characteristic: they are often called insane by traditional horse racing people. Seabiscuit with his human team is able to show his winning ability and capture the imagination of everyone who wants to believe in the possibility. However, Seabiscuit has won only at small races. Charles has high goals and would like Seabiscuit race Triple Crown winner War Admiral. He is, according to all accounts, a winner who should win. Will Seabiscuit be able to race War Admiral, whose owner isn’t keen to race because he doesn’t feel he can prove anything? They all must decide together what is best for them, despite the challenges they face, including Red and Seabiscuit’s mirroring issues. –Huggo
