Match Point
Although he comes from a modest background, Irish Chris Wilton (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), is struggling to make ends meet despite his recent retirement as a high-ranked tennis player. Although he is aware that he has a better future, he accepted a position as a London-based tennis coach. He becomes friends with wealthy Tom Hewett (Matthew Goode), one of his former students. Chris begins to date Tom Hewett’s sister Chloe (Emily Mortimer), who is a young girl-next door type and instantly falls in love with Chris. Chloe soon decides she wants Chris to marry her. Alec Hewett, Chris’ businessman father (Brian Cox), attempts to save Chris and his future by giving him an executive position in Alec’s company. Chris discovers the joys of life through his time with the Hewetts. Chris can’t help but think about Nola Rice (Scarlett Johansson), an American struggling actress whom he met at the Hewett estate. She is Tom’s informal fiancee. Nola is lively and knows how impact she has on Chris. Nola, unlike Chris, isn’t accepted by Tom or Chloe, his mother Eleanor Hewett (Dame Penelope Wilton). Chris must decide whether he will give up the things he’s been able achieve with Chloe, the Hewetts or the love he has for Nola. He will do anything to get his cake and eat it as well. –Huggo
