Jarhead

Anthony “Swoff”, a Camus-reading boy from Sacramento, joins the Marines late in 1980s. He slumbers in boot camp but manages to make it as a sniper with Troy, who is always reliable. His unit is sent to Saudi Arabia in the aftermath of the Gulf War. Desert Storm is born after 175 days filled with boredom, anxiety, heat, concern about his girlfriend losing her mate and almost killing him, demotion and latrine cleaning. It’s done in five days. But Swoff still sees burnt bodies and flaming oil derricks. He also has an oil-soaked horse. And maybe even a shot at death. All the testosterone has gone where? —
