Pete Wagner and Ellie Wagner are feeling empty in their marriage. They visit a foster home. Karen and Sharon are two social workers who guide hopeful adoptive parents through the process of becoming parents. They are taken to an adoption fair, where they can meet the children they want to adopt. Ellie and Pete walk past the teenage children, but Ellie is hesitant about raising teens. Lizzie tells Ellie, however, that everyone knows no one would adopt them. Ellie and Pete talk with Sharon and Karen about possibly adopting Lizzie. They learn that Lizzie’s mom is a drug addict and is in prison. The couple are also informed by social workers that Lizzie set fire to their house because the crack pipe was lit. The social workers also discover that Lizzie is the sister of Juan and Lita, two younger brothers. Even though this may seem more difficult for Pete and Ellie they decide to visit the siblings. Pete and Ellie share Thanksgiving dinner with Ellie’s family. Ellie makes comments about not having faith in Wagners adopting children. Ellie is fed up and says that she will accept foster care in order to show that they are capable of being good parents.
