Hachi: A Dog’s Tale

Parker Wilson, a music professor, commutes by train and finds an Akita pup. His cage was not noticed during shipping and he is now unknown to his destination. The station cannot care for him and the dogcatcher warned that even cute dogs may be difficult to adopt in the time allowed. He kindly took the puppy home. Although his jealous, bossy wife Cate makes Parker promise it wouldn’t leave, once it becomes clear that no one will take him home and an adoptable candidate has been found, she decides to keep the dog. Andy, Andy, and Michael were captivated by their puppy. Parker is inspired by Ken, a Japanese college friend to name the dog Hachi (ko). Parker succeeds in fetching the Akita’s toy. Parker passes away after suffering a heart attack. Hachi has a tradition of sitting at the station waiting to be rescued by his loving master. Hachi refused to be accepted and was moved to Michael’s house as Cate left, while waiting for his master, who is now a collective of the town-folk. Robbie, Michael’s teenage son, tells the story in flashbacks. He also adopts an Akita puppy. –KGF Vissers
