Girl with a Pearl Earring
The film is based on a fiction work by Tracy Chevalier and tells a story of events that led to the creation of Johannes Vermeer’s painting, “Girl With a Pearl Earring”. Although little is known about this girl, there are rumors that she may have been a maid and lived with Vermeer’s family. The film is a masterful attempt to recreate the life of this mysterious young girl. Scarlett Johansson plays Griet. She is the maid at Johannes Vermeer’s house, and played by British actor Colin Firth. Van Ruijven is Vermeer’s only patron and means of support. He commissions Griet to be painted with the intention that he can have her before it’s finished. The crucial painting is so important that she must pose secretly for it without Vermeer’s knowledge. She also needs to avoid Van Ruijven and keep herself safe from cruel gossip about servants of 17th-century Europe. –thexotherxchris
