Elcano & Magellan: The First Voyage Around the World

Mystikal’s director (2010) commemorates 500 years of the greatest sea-travel adventure ever. 1519. Seville (Andalusia, south to Spain) Juan Sebastian Elcano, a young, irresponsible, and reckless man, wants only to be the captain of his small boat. However, due to the outstanding debts with the bank, the manager of Elcano’s bank confiscates Elcano’s boat and orders guards to arrest him. Elcano, who is trying to avoid jail, enlists in an expedition with five ships under the command of Portuguese Admiral Fernando de Magallanes (nicknamed “The Navigator”) to reach Moluca Islands in Indonesia to obtain spices which are very important to Spain’s Kingdom of Castile. The Portuguese ambassador Dacosta attempts to make the trip fail, claiming that Moluca Islands belong Kingdom of Portugal. Yago is hired as a spy and saboteur in order to stop the successful journey. Magallanes is unaware of this and completes the crew of five ships: Trinidad, San Antonio Concepcion Victoria, Santiago and Santiago. Elcano hopes to own his ship and works as the helmsman for Captain Juan de Cartagena. Elcano despises Magallanes and views him as a traitor working for the Kingdom of Portugal. Yago commits sabotage, and Cartagena plots with other captains to obtain Magallanes secret map that will allow him to travel by unexplored lands. The crew promote Elcano to the position of new leader after Magallanes’ death in a fight with the natives of the Philippine Islands. Elcano, who has always traveled to the west to follow the sun, is determined to complete the mission. He will fight Yago, Dacosta and time to make history and take the first ever trip around the globe. –Chockys
