Eighth Grade
Bo Burnham’s feature film debut as a director captures the awkwardness and angst of a teenager girl at the beginning of her high school years. The 27-year old stand-up comedian became famous as a teenager on YouTube, where he riffed on his insecurities. He is uniquely qualified to be the film’s director and writer. This story follows Kayla, an anxious young girl who navigates the last days of eighth grade, even though she chose to portray a male protagonist. Kayla, 13, uses YouTube as a way to express her feelings, much like Burnham did ten years ago. She also makes advice blogs, pretending to be able to do it all. Kayla, who is silent and withdrawn around her father and peers at school, uses Instagram and Twitter to communicate with her classmates. Kayla’s YouTube videos provide a unique narrative that gives insight into her dreams and hopes, similar to an inspiring online journal. Eighth Grade is known for its realness, which has been one of the greatest achievements.
