Cast Away
Chuck Noland, a FedEx executive based in Memphis, and Kelly Frears, a grad student, have been together for many years. Despite being lovers, they have never married. This is because Chuck is often away on business and Kelly is home more frequently. As Chuck rushes to get on another FedEx plane, Kelly gives him a ring. The flight encounters technical problems and crashes somewhere in the South Pacific. A relatively unscathed Chuck is found in a liferaft and he discovers that the island has been deserted. He doesn’t know what happened to his flight mates or the plane. However, he does find some of the items he ordered onboard for delivery that he didn’t treat with respect. Chuck recognizes his primary concern is survival. This primarily refers to food, shelter, fire, and water. He also needs rescue. Survival is not only in a physical sense. He has an heirloom watch that Kelly gave to him for Christmas. After opening FedEx boxes, Wilson received a Wilson volleyball that he painted a face on. Chuck experiences a variety of emotions as he ages. But if rescue ever is possible, he will need to figure out how to escape the island. This is difficult in his situation due to the onshore surf that is too strong for him to reach without help. Chuck might not realize that the longer he waits to be rescued the more difficult it will be to get back to his life, if ever rescued. Kelly’s thought is all that keeps Chuck motivated to rescue him. However, Kelly may believe him dead and have lost touch with him emotionally. –Huggo
