Captain Fantastic

Ben and Leslie Cash are largely living off the grid together with their children — Bodevan and Kielyr and Vespyr and Rellian — in a cabin high in the Washington mountains. Their socialist survivalist values have been passed on to their children by their parents. Ben believes that most Western societies are fascists, particularly corporate America. Ben believes no one should or will be there to help you. It is important that you learn how you can take care of your own health. The children are well-trained in physical therapy, have learned how to manage minor cuts, bumps and bruises and how to treat fractures. They also know how to forage and hunt their food. They are not registered home-schooled and have no academic records. Ben and Leslie tried to teach the children critical thinking, but within their own ideals. These issues aside, Ben and Leslie decided to lead this lifestyle in order for Leslie’s good health. Leslie, a former attorney was later diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Ben thinks that her postpartum depression after having Bo was the cause of this disorder. But Leslie has been suffering from worsening conditions. Ben, despite not believing in Western medicine sends Leslie into Harper’s hospital so there is family nearby. While hospitalized, Leslie commits suicide. Leslie commits suicide while in hospital. This brings out the conflict between Ben Bertrang and Leslie. Bertrang is a Christian who blames Ben for Leslie’s death but also believes Leslie’s actions “to” his children could be legal abuse. Jack assumes control of the funeral plans, in accordance with his and Abby Bertrang’s Christian morals. This is against Leslie’s will, since she believes in Buddhist philosophy. Jack threatened to report Ben to police if Ben didn’t show up at the funeral. However, Ben and his children feel it is their duty to honour Leslie’s wishes that he be cremated according to Buddhist philosophy. The mission may not only bring Jack and Ben closer together, but it may also expose the Cash children to all that is good about commercial America. As Bo matures, Bo may even have his own thoughts on what the next stage of his life should look like. –Huggo
