Cabaret (1972)
Brian Roberts, a Cambridge University student arrives in Berlin to finish his German studies in 1931. He plans to make a living teaching English and living in a cheap rooming house. While he doesn’t have much, he meets American Sally Bowles, another tenant. Outwardly, she is a vibrant, happy, and charismatic singer who performs at Kit Kat Klub (a cabaret-style venue). Sally is an outwardly charming woman, but the Klub’s master of ceremonies oversees her. Sally lures Brian into her world and wants him to become one of her lovers. But, she soon discovers that Brian is actually a homosexual. His students include the poor Fritz Wendel who is looking to become a gigolo in order to have a happy life. The beautiful and straight-laced Natalia Landauer, an heir to the Jewish family. Fritz sees Natalia initially as his money ticket. But he eventually comes to love her. Natalia suspects Fritz of having ulterior motives, and they cannot reconcile their religious differences. Sally and Brian are also impacted by the rich Baron Maximilian von Heune. He has the same outlook as Sally but has the financial means to make it happen. Max will lavish gifts on his friends and show his affections. They all seem to be unaware of the Nazi Uprising. They eventually learn that they are still living in the midst of all things, good and bad. –Huggo
