Ron Stallworth, the first officer of color in Colorado Springs’ police department, is appointed as a black officer during the 1970s. Stallworth initially is assigned to the records room. He faces racism from coworkers. Stallworth asks for a transfer so he can go undercover. He is given the task of infiltrating a rally where national civil rights leader Kwame Turke (birthname Stokely Carmichael), is scheduled to speak. Stallworth is introduced to Patrice Dumas (president of Colorado College’s black student union). Patrice, while taking Ture back to his hotel is confronted by Andy Landers (a racist, corrupt officer from Stallworth’s precinct) who sexually assaults and threatens Ture.
