Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)

Riggan Thomson, an actor and comedian is best known for playing the role of Birdman, a comic-book superhero from twenty years ago in the movie “Birdman” as well as its sequels. He was captivated by the role, and Birdman has become more famous than Riggan Thomson the actor. Riggan, now in his mid-twenties, is trying to be an artist. He is writing, directing and starring in the Broadway adaptation of Raymond Carver’s “What We Talk About when We Talk about Love.” Riggan is willing to risk his artistic reputation, his life savings, as well as his name on the production, in order to ensure the success of the show. He and Jake are going through previews towards opening night. Riggan has to confront several problems. Jake is looking for a replacement for an integral male supporting role; Mike Shiner from Broadway, who can be difficult to work alongside and may overshadow Riggan; Riggan has to face a potential lawsuit for one of his actions. Riggan also has to support his daughter Sam who he hired as his production assistant. Tabitha Dickinson of The New York Times wants any excuse she has to write a harsh review. This would then close the play. Riggan may have his biggest issue with his insecurity. He hears the Birdman voice constantly telling him the truth, something he struggles to overcome both internally as well as externally. –Huggo
