Once Upon a Time in China
This martial arts film is set in Canton, late 19th-century China. It depicts Wong Fei Hung’s (1847-1924), legendary martial artist against the plundering by foreign (English, French, and American) forces. Wong Fei Hung takes on the protector role for Aunt Yee after she returns from America completely westernized. It is not easy when Wong Fei-Hung’s martial arts school, and the local militia are involved in violent battles against foreign and local governments. Aunt Yee is forced to question her western ideas as violence increases. But, can Aunt Yee fight gunmen with Kung Fu? Michele Wilkinson University of Cambridge Language Centre
