Novitiate

1964. Cathleen Harris was in her late teens when she moved to the Convent of the Beloved rose in her native state of the American south. She first lived there as a postulant, for six months before making her vows to be a novice. Like the novices and postulants, Sister Cathleen was not raised Catholic. Her decision to become nun against the wishes of her mother, who was divorced, might have been more secure than that of her coworkers, for whom this path may be better bred in them. This convent’s leader is Reverend Mother Marie Saint Clare. She has not been there in 40 years. The Reverend Mother is convinced she speaks for God in the confines of the convent and does not allow any sisters to question her authority. Her Catholicism, which she’s known her whole life, is also perfect. She refuses to follow the Second Vatican Council, more commonly known as Vatican II, which was established in 1962 to open the Catholic Church to new ideas. This is the backdrop to Sister Cathleen’s quest to be a nun. Her process isn’t as simple as she thinks. The Reverend Mother’s rigid methods and refusals to modernize her make it difficult for her to succeed. –Huggo
